Busting the BMI Myth with Dr. Maggie Landes, MD

Excerpt:

In my work as a personal trainer and nutritionist, the main goal I hear from my clients is to lose weight.  When questioned as to their reason for wanting to lose weight, the most common answer is “to be healthy”.

Of course we all want to be the healthiest we possibly can be, and it is a commonly held belief that thin equates to healthy.  Having a high BMI has been linked with diseases such as heart attack, stroke, diabetes, cancer and more.  However, it is a myth that having a high BMI causes these things.

In this episode, I am joined by Maggie Landes, MD who explains how BMI in and of itself, is not the best indicator of health.  In fact, our weight loss and dieting attempts actually increase our risk and lead to worse health outcomes than our weight alone.

Maggie explains her “un-dieted” approach to eating and how chasing health at EVERY size is possible.  She also discusses body image and weight stigma with practical strategies to help you self-advocate.

What you’ll learn by listening:

  • Why BMI is not the best indicator of your health, and what actually is
  • How dieting, or attempts to control your weight, actually leads to negative health outcomes and how giving up dieting can be the healthiest choice you make
  • What the “Un-dieted” approach to eating means and the steps you can take to have a more peaceful relationship to food
  • Strategies to use if you have been stigmatized due to weight
  • The difference between “correlation” and “causation
