Episode 45 - Fatphobia, Weight stigma and Body Shame - Jemma’s Story

Jemma, our guest on the show today introduces herself as a fat, able-bodied, white woman, who throughout her life has internalized the belief that her life is less valuable because of her size.

In this episode, Jemma shares her experiences of discrimination and weight stigma, and how these affected her mental and emotional wellbeing and her self-worth. For her whole life, Jemma believed her body was wrong, and she in turn was a bad person because she couldn’t fix herself and therefore didn’t deserve any joy or good things in life.

So when it came to moving her body, the idea of joyful movement was impossible.  She wanted to move her body, but more notably – she felt that she needed to move her body to fix herself, and as such there was a block around moving for joy.

Tune in to hear Jemma’s vulnerable and inspiring story of transformation, how she began to feel confident in her worth and heal her relationship with movement, food, her body and her SELF.
