Episode 67 – Is There A Healthy Way to Lose Weight
In this episode we address a common question – “is there a healthy way to lose weight”.
Most people know that restrictive eating, extreme exercise, tracking calories, detoxes, and miracle pills do not work in the long term and will likely result in rebound weight gain.
But there’s a new trend in the fitness and weight loss industry suggesting that we can get lasting, sustainable weight loss by making simple lifestyle changes like drinking more water, eating more whole foods, moving regularly, reducing stress and getting more sleep.
On this episode we discuss:
- What we mean by “healthy” weight loss
- Answer the question if it’s possible to get sustained weight loss without restriction, tracking, extreme exercise or deprivation
- Why we’re missing the point when we adopt health seeking behaviours for the purpose of weight loss
- How focusing on what we can control (our behaviours and habits) is more productive than focusing on weight
- The social determinants of health, and how our eating and exercise behaviour isn’t the be all end all for health
- Why the phrase “it’s ok to be in a larger body as long as you’re healthy” is so problematic
