EP 70 – Fit and Fat with Dr. Cindy Dallow
Welcome to part 4 of this four part series all about weight and health.
Most people believe that in order to improve in any area of fitness (strength, endurance, speed, mobility, etc), they must achieve a certain body weight. As such, when people set fitness goals, there is usually a weight loss goal attached. We think that if we lose weight, we will become stronger, faster and fitter through the act of weight loss alone.
This is not only untrue, but it can be quite problematic.
This week, we are joined by Dr. Cindy Dallow, a registered dietician who specializes in women’s health and sports nutrition. In this episode, Cindy and I discuss how weight is an inaccurate predictor of fitness and how losing or gaining weight has very little bearing on our fitness level.
Instead, Cindy teaches us what to focus on if we do want to improve our fitness level and how we can do so safely and sustainably.
What you’ll learn by listening:
- The set point range theory of weight and what can happen to our metabolism, athletic performance and fitness when we try to lose weight below our set point range
- How focusing on cardiorespiratory fitness is a much better predictor of health than BMI
- Why losing weight doesn’t necessarily make you fitter, faster or stronger and how it can actually impair your fitness
- Why it’s much more beneficial to our health to focus on fitness than weight
- The amount and type of activity required to yield the greatest health benefits
