My three secrets for managing meal time chaos

Is it just me, or is meal time a total gong show at your house too?

They don’t call it the witching hour for nothing!

 

Everyone’s arriving home eager to share about their day; starving and wanting food NOW and there’s only 1 hour before you have to leave for the evening activities. (honestly, I’m kinda thankful for the slower pace lately – #thankscovid 😉 )

You need to get something made fast, and it needs to be something that everyone will like, so frozen pizza wins again. And then you wash the mom guilt down with a swig of wine 🙁

Oh mama – I so get you! And I’m right there with ya!

But I have found a couple tools that really do help.
  1. Meal planning – knowing what I’m going to make saves oodles of time and stress. No one wants to be deciding what to make when everyone’s starving.
  2. Planning “themes” on a meal. If you watch my What’s for Dinner Wednesday, you’ll see how I do this. Often it looks like a little buffet. I make one meal, but keep the various ingredients separated so that everyone can pick and choose the parts they like.
  3. The “Raw to Voila” formula. This is the big one! This is my secret weapon for combining foods in such a way that I can throw things together using what I have on hand without needing a recipe. So those nights when things fall off the rails, I can just look in my fridge, see what’s handy and whip something up fast.

It’s by no means a perfect system, but it sure has helped! With a large busy family, all of whom have different dietary restrictions and preferences, being organized is a MUST!
